Purpose Dose management systems (DMS) are fundamental quality assurance instrument for patients' radiation exposure optimization purposes (1). ESR EuroSafe Imaging (2024) survey reports limited distribution globally, mainly because of IT support lack and high costs. Currently, <5 hospitals in Bulgaria have DMS, due to high cost (2).The purpose was to design and develop Bulgarian DMS, BulDose, jointly with the largest provider of Bulgarian PACS solutions. After successful test period, it will be provided for free to >70 hospitals using the Bulgarian...
Read more Methods and materials BULDose is the first Bulgarian dose management system (DMS) that was developed within the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) supported National TC Project BUL9026 - Enhancing National Capacity for Ensuring Radiation Protection of Patients Undergoing High Dose Medical Imaging Procedures. BulDose was designed by a group of medical physicist for automatic registration, recording and tracking of patient exposures, daily dose monitoring, clinical image quality, frequency of examinations, and workload of departments and medical facilities. The purpose of BULDose is to...
Read more Results BulDose collects patient exposure data in RDSR format or DICOM format from PACS or directly from the imaging modalities, performs basic statistical analysis, including generation of typical doses and local diagnostic reference levels. It is a web-based application, with graphical interface in Bulgarian and English languages (fig. 1). [fig 1] Connection to different PACS systems is facilitated via DICOM protocol. Computed tomography, interventional radiology, nuclear medicine with hybrid imaging modalities, radiography, fluoroscopy, and mammography are supported. The platform was developed using...
Read more Conclusion BulDose is web-based platform, requiring minimal local hardware and low costs, allowing to be installed in most of the hospitals in Bulgaria. Its availability is expected to improve the optimization of patients’ radiation protection in our country. As a future development, BuLDose could also be used to automatically send data to the national patient dose surveys web-based platform and to be part of the development of the national electronic patient records. Dose management systems are considered as an essential tool...
