Learning objectives Discuss and illustrate imaging features of male pelvic cysts (MPCs) on MRI, as well as their complications. Provide a diagnostic approach with a workflow proposal for MPCs.
Read more Background MPCs are complex and can be challenging to diagnose, because of anatomical complexity and proximity of different organs in this region, and as cystic lesions from nearby structures may mimic prostatic or periprostatic abnormalities. While ultrasound and CT can assist the diagnosis, MRI remains the modality of choice given its excellent spatial and contrast resolution in the pelvis, providing a detailed anatomical segmentation.
Read more Findings and procedure details MPCs are uncommon and predominantly benign, often referred to as “do not touch” lesions. These cysts arise from diverse anatomic structures and are sometimes associated with genitourinary abnormalities or symptoms.Although transrectal ultrasound and CT imaging play supportive roles, pelvic MRI remains the preferred diagnostic tool, providing noninvasive and detailed visualization of the prostate gland and associated structures.MPCs can be categorized into two main groups: intraprostatic and extraprostatic cysts.A-Intraprostatic cysts : When considering the location, Intraprostatic cysts can be further classified into...
Read more Conclusion Although most cysts of the male pelvis consist of "do-not-touch" lesions, the radiologist must recognize them and highlight complications, as well as those potentially malignant lesions that require treatment.
