Purpose Scoping exercise of the RR workforce in NWE to determine: Number of Trusts with RR reporting PFI examinations. Number and Agenda for Change (AfC) banding of RRs reporting PFI. Types/body regions of PFI reported upon (examples - chest X-ray (CXR), musculo-skeletal (MSK) - axial/appendicular etc.). Presence/absence/nature of job plan. Number or reports expected per session. PFI reporting output volume (01/04/2022>31/03/2023). Impact of RRs on total PFI reporting output volumes. Requirements for double reporting. Qualifications required for RR independent reporting. Governance arrangements for independent RR practice. Preceptorship, mentorship/ CPD for RRs. Barriers to...
Read more Methods and materials Background. 95% patients have diagnostic imaging during hospital stay in England. 31% shortfall consultant radiologists in England 2023, predicted 41% by 2028 [1].  9.9 radiologists/100,000 population in England compared to 12.8/100,000 (OECD average) [1].  Waiting times for imaging are long; urgent scan waits sometimes >8 months [1]. Timely issue of reports is important. Figure 1 shows figures for diagnostic bottlenck [1]. Delayed issue of reports > poorer health outcomes [1]. Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) stated  the number of departmental reports expected on average over a "six-month...
Read more Results 100% questionnaire return rate. Results, for RRs reporting PFI in NWE. 2/24 2 hospitals did not have RRs. 91% (20/22) hospitals had RRs, 333 by headcount/178 by WTE. 156 WTE RRs reporting PFI for 7.1m population (only 7.8 WTE hospital). 92% reported PFI only; 8% PFI + other modality/ies. Figure 2 shows variation of % RRs in AfC bandings. Expectedly, majority (89%) were Band 7 as been 'adopted' by hospitals as reasonable banding for scope of practice. Table 1, figure 3 show number by headcount reporting PFI...
Read more Conclusion Qualified RRs have been contributing effectively to reporting PFI for decades. However, staffing and financial constraints in NHS affecting ongoing effectiveness: Number qualified RRs is very low/100,000 population; this cannot usefully contribute to reporting output productivty given rising demand for NHS imaging services. Shortage of radigraphers in UK does not provide adequate workforce to upskill as RRs, given they are often required to provide image aquisition.  Lack of adequately trained staff trained in image acqusition exist to allow RR training. Lack of training posts/recurrent...
