Purpose The aim of this study is to assess the role of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) as potential predictors of both the severity of acute colonic diverticulitis and the clinical outcome after treatment.
Read more Methods and materials Diverticular disease includes two main conditions: diverticulosis and diverticulitis. Diverticulosis is the presence of one or more intestinal outpouchings, called diverticula, in the colon or small intestine. Colonic pseudodiverticula, or false diverticula, form when mucosa and submucosa herniate through the muscular layer at sites where blood vessels enter the colon, a phenomenon most commonly observed in the sigmoid colon [1], [2].The prevalence of diverticular disease has increased over the past century and has traditionally been regarded as a condition primarily...
Read more Results A total of 131 patients between 23 and 92 years, with a mean age of 60.03 ± 15.20 years, were evaluated (median=58; 95% CI=55-62.19). Of these, 54 were male (41.22%) and 77 female (58.78%).In total, 29 patients (22.14%) were treated surgically and 102 (77.86%) conservatively; clinical success was achieved in 109 cases (83.21%) against 22 therapeutic failures (16.79%).The mean value of lymphocytes before treatment was 1.7208 ± 1.28 (range=0.09-13.8; median=1.6; 95% CI=1.45-1.68); the mean value of neutrophils was 11.87 ±...
Read more Conclusion CRP is associated with the severity of acute diverticulitis in all cases examined. On the other hand, neutrophil values and NLR are associated with the severity of acute diverticulitis in cases staged according to WSES. At access to ED, neither higher CRP values nor a higher NLR have been shown to be associated with patients’ outcome.
