Learning objectives To delineate the spectrum of imaging findings observed in various paraneoplastic syndromes and illustrate the clinical manifestations precipitated by these syndromes.
Read more Background Paraneoplastic Syndromes (PNSs) comprise a constellation of disease manifestations arising from underlying neoplasms, without direct tumor invasion. These syndromes exhibit a diverse array of symptoms and multifaceted systemic impacts. We can divide them in different categories, such as: neurological syndromes, endocrine syndromes, rheumatological/dermatological syndromes, hematologic syndromes, and miscellaneous syndromes.
Read more Findings and procedure details The clinical manifestations associated with these syndromes are heterogeneous, often mediated through the action of cytokines, hormones, or immune cross-reactivity. This presentation utilizes radiological images sourced from our institution to elucidate the underlying radiographic findings characterizing these paraneoplastic syndromes.Drawing from our clinical experience, we have encountered several paraneoplastic syndromes, including: Neurological syndromes: - Anti-GABAAR Encephalitis:Antibodies targeting the ALFA1 and β3 subunits of this receptor are linked to seizures and status epilepticus in cases of autoimmune encephalitis. Symptom prevalence and associated conditions...
Read more Conclusion Timely identification of paraneoplastic syndromes holds the potential for early detection and intervention in previously undetected neoplastic conditions. As radiologists we should be familiar with the commonly encountered PNSs and their distinctive imaging features.
