Learning objectives The purpose of this exhibit is: To review a stepwise radiologic diagnostic approach to reach a correct diagnosis of several lung cyst diseases. To review and illustrate the imaging features in high-resolution CT of lung cyst diseases.
Read more Background As defined by the Fleishchner Society glossary of terms, lung cysts are round parenchymal lucencies or low-attenuation areas with well-defined interfaces with normal adjacent lungs. They are characteristically thin-walled structures with walls less than 3 mm in size, usually containing air, but also fluid or solid material. [fig 1] Isolated pulmonary parenchymal cysts are seen commonly on computed tomography, but we should be aware that there is also a wide heterogeneous group of diseases associated with lung cysts, making the differential diagnosis challenging....
Read more Findings and procedure details The first step in the radiological approach, when faced with an air lesion, is to make a radiologic distinction between a true lung cyst and a cyst-like lesion. We must assess their size, wall thickness, number, location, distribution, and associated radiologic findings, to distinguish between true lung cysts and cyst-like lesions. [fig 2] STEP 1: Are there true lung cysts?A true lung cyst is a round parenchymal lucency with a well-defined interface with normal lung parenchyma, usually with a thin-walled (<2 mm) and...
Read more Conclusion The frequent appearance and overlap of the imaging features of cysts lungs promote the important role of the radiologist to recognize the different patterns to differentiate each of the pathologic entities in order to target the best treatment. As discussed in this poster, an effective way to facilitate the correct diagnosis of cyst entities is through the use of a simple and clear radiological diagram. The first step is to differentiate between a true lung cyst and a cyst-like lesion....
