Conclusion

CONCLUSION:

Healthcare professional (HCPs) who undertake any examination or procedure involving visualisation of the female external genitalia need to be aware of FGM and that FGM survivors have different:

> FGM types,

> ethnic backgrounds,

> language proficiency,

> health literacy

> care navigation skills and levels of trauma

HSG/HyCoSy and US techniques must be undertaken with gentleness and sensitivity.

If FGM is recognised it MUST be documented in the imaging report and patient care record.

A collaborative working relationship and liaison with specialist HCPs, to provide support and onward management for FGM survivors is vital.

Appointment of a departmental FGM advocate within Imaging can facilitate this care.

Imaging departments should ensure standard operating procedures and educational programmes are in place and be aware of their local or nearest specialist FGM clinic to enable onward referral.
