Purpose Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) emphasizes the random movement of water molecules at the microscopic level. A motion-probing gradient is applied to enhance diffusion in DWI, and its strength is called the b value. The apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) can be calculated using DWI with two or more different b values. ADC values can decrease in pathological conditions characterized by a high cell density [1-3], high viscosity [4], and the presence of cellular edema [5-7].Echo planar imaging (EPI) is commonly used in...
Read more Methods and materials All procedures were performed using a 0.4-T permanent MRI system (APERTO Inspire; FUJIFILM, Tokyo, Japan). The phantoms were prepared with MnCl2 (Wako Pure Chemical Industries, Osaka, Japan) at seven different concentrations (0, 0.02, 0.05, 0.10, 0.20, 0.40, and 0.80 mM). The phantoms were placed in acrylic resin containers (Kyoto Kagaku, Kyoto, Japan) and surrounded by fluid paraffin. Fig 1a–c show an overview of the phantoms. The phantoms were left in the MRI room (with a temperature of 24°C) for 24 h.Image...
Read more Results Fig 2 and Table 2 show the T2 map and values of each phantom. The T2 values decreased with higher MnCl2 concentrations.Figs 3a-b and 4 and Table 3 show the ADC value of each phantom obtained using RADAR and EPI DWI. In RADAR DWI, no significant differences were observed in the ADC values. In EPI DWI, the ADC values of phantoms with MnCl2 0.40 and 0.80 mM were significantly lower than those of the phantom with an MnCl2 0 mM...
Read more Conclusion This study showed that RADAR DWI can calculate ADC values more accurately than EPI DWI in the presence of MnCl2.Our phantoms were created by adjusting the MnCl2 concentration, and the T2 values decreased as the MnCl2 concentration increased. MnCl2, a paramagnetic material, is used as a contrast medium in MRI, and it shortens T2 values by disrupting the local magnetic field due to its magnetic susceptibility [14,15]. Moreover, our phantoms reflected the T2 value shortening effect of MnCl2, with a...
