Learning objectives To compile a comprehensive CT-atlas of “complex” pulmonary nodule morphology and classification, as recently redefined by the new “Fleischner Society: Glossary of Terms for Thoracic Imaging”. This atlas aims to serve as an educational resource for radiologists and those in training to provide visual examples of the diverse appearances of nodules. Thereby, the atlas will help to improve diagnosis and classification in clinical practice.
Read more Background The previous “Glossary of Terms for Thoracic Imaging” established by the Fleischner Society profoundly shaped the use of terminology in thoracic radiology over the past decades. Within these guidelines, pulmonary nodules, a term, which is among the most often used by radiologists, were categorized as either “solid”, “ground-glass”, and “part-solid”. These characterizations had wide implications for non-radiologists due to their potential consequences in patient treatment strategies. Despite this, its use was subject to ongoing discussions among physicians, in part, due...
Read more Findings and procedure details The permutation revealed 10 potential combinations for 2-component nodules, and 10 potential combinations for 3-component nodules. The possible combinations are shown in Figure 1. Using these results, we identified 3 CT examples for each combination, resulting in 60 images overall (10x3 and 10x3, respectively). These CT examples were then compiled to form the final atlas. Figures 2 to 7 show representative examples of simple and complex nodules.
Read more Conclusion Our comprehensive CT-atlas of “complex” pulmonary nodules morphology illustrates the nodules-related part of the new “Fleischner Society: Glossary of Terms for Thoracic Imaging”. It may serve as reference for both trainees and more experienced radiologists and help them navigate this multifaceted category of lesions.
