Purpose The main aim of this research was to examine the association of radiological parameters on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with observed symptoms in patients with clinically diagnosed temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ OA).The secondary goal was to show the distribution of the TMJ OA diagnosis according to age and gender.
Read more Methods and materials Osteoarthritis (OA) refers to active and inactive degenerative changes in the cartilage and bone located in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which occur due to increased loading of the joint surfaces. In the active form of the disease (osteoarthritis), pain and limited jaw mobility occur, while in the chronic form, crepitus is observed1,2.It is difficult to determine the exact prevalence of TMJ OA, as radiological features of this condition have been described even in asymptomatic individuals. For this reason, prevalence varies...
Read more Results Out of the 124 patients, 121 were females and the average age was 46.86 years. [fig 7] The pain occurred in the left TMJ in 84 patients, the right TMJ in 71 patients, and on both sides in 31 patients. In the painful joints (155 TMJs), radiological signs of OA were observed in 119 TMJs (76.77%), anterior disc displacement with reduction (ADDWR) in 34 TMJs (21.94%), anterior disc displacement without reduction (ADDWoR) in 73 TMJs (47.1%), and joint effusion in 71 TMJs...
Read more Conclusion Our study showed that the majority of patients with TMJ OA are middle-aged women, which is in concordance with the existing literature3. Various studies have shown conflicting results regarding the correlation between clinical signs and symptoms and radiological findings of bone changes on CBCT. However, the prevailing opinion is that this correlation is generally weak11. Additionally, as with all other bone tissues, significant demineralization is required for the changes to be radiologically visible, meaning they are often only detectable months...
