Background

The recesses of the heart refer to the pericardial recesses, which are small spaces or pouches formed by the pericardium as it folds around the heart and great vessels. These are important for several clinical and diagnostic reasons as pericardial recesses can often mimic other structures such as enlarged lymph nodes, mediastinal masses, or even aortic dissection on imaging particularly on CT, leading to potential misdiagnosis if not properly identified.
