Learning objectives To illustrate the imaging characteristics of various mesenteric lesions and to provide a systematic approach to their differential diagnosis using computed tomography (CT).To highlight the key radiological features of main mesenteric lesions. To improve diagnostic accuracy and guide appropriate clinical management.
Read more Background This pictorial review is based on CT images of mesenteric lesions collected from patients in our department with some of the main mesenteric lesions; we classified as examples lesions into solid and cystic masses, inflammatory conditions, and vascular anomalies. Some examples were selected to demonstrate the imaging features that could help in differentiating benign and malignant conditions.
Read more Findings and procedure details Distinctive imaging patterns such as "whorled appearance" in desmoid tumors, mucinous ascites, hypervascularity in neuroendocrine tumors help narrow the differential diagnosis; however some lesions present overlapping features, making the differential diagnosis more challenging. Recognition of subtle radiological signs, such as calcifications or necrosis could help differentiating lesions. MISTY MESENTERYThis term describes increased mesenteric fat attenuation that could represent fat infiltration by inflammatory cells, fluid, tumor, and/or fibrosis [1].It is a non specifical sign, linked to numerous conditions, that’s why becomes important...
Read more Conclusion Recognize the CT signs of some of the main pathologies involving the mesentery through some peculiarities of each of the pathologies presented makes possible to reach the most correct diagnosis and direct the patient towards the most correct therapeutic procedure.
