Background

Meningitis is an inflammatory syndrome involving the meninges and can affect either the leptomeninges (arachnoid and pia mater) with the subarachnoid space and/or the pachymeninge (dura mater). In the first case, the infectious process may extend to the underlying nerve tissue (meningoencephalitis).
