Methods and materials

This systematic review was undertaken at University College Cork, Ireland and registered with PROSPERO (CRD42022377779). A comprehensive literature search was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines5 in March 2023. Databases searched included; PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Google Scholar and Sciencedirect. Within the review, studies were deemed eligible for inclusion if they were peer-reviewed and published in English (Fig. 2). Studies could further be included if they included human participants and data from anthropomorphic or or dosimetry phantoms. The initial selection process included screening the paper title and abstract. Once relevant papers were identified, a full text assessment was carried out. Quality and Risk of Bias Assessment was formally assessed by a study researcher using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 tool (QUADAS-2) with data extraction focusing on radiation dose and image quality metrics.6
