Learning objectives To highlight the role of radiologists in the multidisciplinary management of breast cancer, discussing the diagnosis, staging, surgical planning and integration of imaging findings into treatment strategies and follow-up.  To present breast radiologist limits for each step.
Read more Background Radiologists are central to the journey of breast cancer (BC) patients, from the moment of diagnosis through treatment and follow-up. With increasing reliance on advanced imaging modalities such as mammography (Mx), ultrasound (US), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), radiologists provide accurate diagnoses and actionable insights. Their expertise extends to performing image-guided biopsies and guiding surgical planning. Furthermore, radiologists play a key role in multidisciplinary tumor boards (MTBs), collaborating with oncologists, surgeons and pathologists to deliver patient-centered care. Radiologists also face...
Read more Findings and procedure details Radiologists role in every step of the BC patients will be disscused. DiagnosisRadiologists are the ones identifying and characterizing breast lesions. Mx is the cornerstone of BC screening, particularly in women over 40 years of age, being effective for detecting calcifications and asymmetries. US is the first imaging tool for the patients under 30 years old and the first that comes after a positive Mx. Breast US in women older than 40 can be negative for abnormalities. [fig 1] On US,...
Read more Conclusion Radiologists play a vital role in BC management, contributing to accurate diagnosis, staging, therapy monitoring, surgical planning, and follow-up. Their active participation in MTBs ensures imaging findings are integrated into treatment strategies, optimizing patient outcomes. While challenges exist, advancements in imaging technologies and stronger collaboration with other specialists continue to enhance their role in BC care.
